John is now retired, having spent most of his career as a lecturer at the Army School of Signals in Blandford. He has lived in or near Shaftesbury since 1982, and joined the Council in 2010. During his time as Mayor (2017-18), he chose “Dementia Friendly Shaftesbury” as his Charity, and he created the Shaftesbury and District Dementia Friendly Community (SDDFC) Steering Group, which he currently chairs. This group (which is not part of the Council, but receives support from it) is working to co-ordinate the efforts of all the organisations in the Town. SDDFC has also launched “Melodies Remembered”, a singing group aimed at those living with Dementia. Shaftesbury is now officially recognised as a Dementia Friendly Community.
