Town Hall, Shaftesbury, Dorset, SP7 8LY

FROM:         The Town Clerk, Mrs Claire Commons
DATE:          12th July 2018
SUBJECT:    PRESS STATEMENT Week ending 13th July 2018

Officers jointly compile press statements in consultation with members of the town council’s media sub-committee. Weekly content includes responses to enquiries received from its media partners.

The Town Council held an extraordinary Council Meeting on 11th July 2018 in response to a letter from the Shaftesbury Civic Society and in anticipation of an outcome from the Parish Meeting called by six Shaftesbury residents. Debate related to potential challenge of the District Council’s processes and lack of consultation in relation to the pending sale of the Cattle Market site at Christy’s Lane

The following resolutions were made:

“That the Council formally writes to NDDC to ask that it suspends the sale of the Cattle Market site to allow NDDC to carry out a full public consultation into the impact of the sale on the people of Shaftesbury. That letter to be copied to all District Councillors and Officers.”

“That the Council formally writes to NDDC to request the marketing schedule and materials in relation to the sale of the Cattle Market site. That letter to be copied to all District Councillors.” NDDC agreed to provide the marketing material at the Town Meeting on 11th June and to-date this has not been received by Shaftesbury Town Council.

“That the Town Council engages a solicitor to make all necessary enquires with a view to preparing a case but not as far as briefing counsel regarding mediation or Judicial Review. The Judicial Review decision to be based on the outcome of the Parish Poll.”

Following the Town Meeting of 11th June, Shaftesbury Town Council has already instructed a legal team.

The Council also agreed to;

hold an extraordinary council meeting the day following the parish poll (provisionally scheduled for 9th August 2018); and that Town Clerk seeks additional legal advice in relation to a possible extension of time as prescribed in the Judicial Review Guidelines.

Shaftesbury Town Council respects the democratic process which has been triggered by the calling of a Parish Poll. A Parish Poll is an opportunity to formally vote on a question agreed at a Parish Meeting. More details on this will be published once a date has been confirmed by the District Council. Shaftesbury Town Council will endeavour to make publicly available as much information as possible on this topic so that Shaftesbury residents are fully informed ahead of their opportunity to vote in the Parish Poll.
