Press Statement – Street Market – 25/3/2020

Town Hall, Shaftesbury, Dorset, SP7 8LY

FROM:         The Town Clerk, Mrs Claire Commons
DATE:          25th March 2020
SUBJECT:    Street Market

In Shaftesbury Town Council’s role to represent the people of Shaftesbury, the difficult decision has been taken to cancel tomorrow’s street market.

Despite government guidance to continue with food stalls, the overwhelming response from the people of Shaftesbury, including doctors and nurses and the MP has been that the market should not go ahead even though it is permissible.

These are difficult and exceptional times where balancing the needs and wellbeing of all presents even more challenge. Our hearts go out to those stall holders who prepared their produce and for those who have bought supplies and will be struggling to find an outlet for them. Where possible, stall holders will be put in touch with local food outlets that are providing a takeaway service in the hope that they can mitigate their losses.

Shaftesbury Town Council’s role, first and foremost, is to represent the people of Shaftesbury. With the online message being overwhelmingly demanding the market doesn’t go ahead, the Council is representing those views above the government guidance to continue. The street market is therefore cancelled until further notice.
