Shaftesbury Town Council has been working with stakeholders across the community on ‘Project Belle’. These stakeholders are represented by business and sector experts who have proven knowledge and capabilities in their field.

Following a series of consultation exercises, resident and business feedback, it has become evident that the Shaftesbury community want to see the Bell Street supermarket building brought back to life.

At a meeting of the Council on 11th September 2018, it was resolved to form an Economic Development Advisory Committee to advise the council on matters relating to the economic health of the town. The Council also agreed to instruct a feasibility study to explore the viability and sustainability of ‘Project Belle’.

Whilst there are no definitive outcomes for the project at this stage, a number of options are being explored by stakeholders with a view to making a bid should it prove feasible to do so. These options include retail, affordable housing, flexible space, enterprise hub, start-up units and a commercial / leisure offer to drive income to support the venture.

Stakeholders are all in agreement that the objective of this community led project is to bring the redundant building back to life through community and commercial options. Once the feasibility study is complete, a further update will be provided which will outline the summary of plans.

The building is now being actively marketed by a commercial agent and there are likely to be other expressions of interest. The Town Council and stakeholders are working hard to put a competitive proposal forward supported by the feasibility study.
