Council approves reduced children’s price at Shaftesbury Lido
Families visiting Shaftesbury Lido will soon find it easier on the pocket, after councillors unanimously approved to reduce the price for children under 11 to encourage more family swimming.
Making family swimming more affordable
At the Full Council meeting on Tuesday 27th January, councillors considered pricing proposals for Shaftesbury Lido’s main season, as recommended by the Shaftesbury Swimming Advisory Committee (SSAC).
During the discussion, Cllr Edwyn-Jones proposed extending the Under 3’s price band to include all children under 11, keeping the cost at £2.50 per child. She emphasised that the council’s role is to provide community facilities, not to focus on profit.
Supporting families and community access
Last year, children under three were charged £2.50, while children aged four to 17 paid £4.50. The new pricing will allow families to enjoy the outdoor pool more frequently at a lower cost.
Cllr Williams highlighted that the team at Friends of Shaftesbury Swimming (FOSS) are very keen to support family-focused initiatives, underlining the shared ambition to make the Lido welcoming and accessible to all ages.
Balancing affordability and attendance
Councillors also noted that while the reduced children’s price may lead to lower revenue per visit, it is hoped that increased attendance will offset the shortfall, encouraging more families to enjoy regular trips to the pool.
Following the debate, Cllr Edwyn-Jones formally proposed that the 2026 Lido prices be approved with the amended children’s rate. The motion was seconded by Cllr Yeo and carried unanimously.
The decision reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting local families and ensuring community facilities remain affordable, inclusive, and well-used.
