Following extensive deliberations and public engagement, Shaftesbury Town Council has resolved to increase the town’s portion of the Council Tax to ensure the continued provision of vital services and investment in community assets. Shaftesbury’s share of the council tax for a Band D property will be set at £219.67 per year, equivalent to £4.22 per week. The adjustment represents an increase of 84p per week for a Band D property, equating to £43.93 per year. Other household bands will be adjusted accordingly.
This adjustment comes after several years of maintaining an unchanged precept per household, with only two increases since 2018. This has benefitted Shaftesbury residents, but with rising costs of goods and services, this decision is now necessary to preserve and improve essential services and town assets.
Councillor Alexander Chase, Chair and Mayor of the Town Council, commented: “We understand that any increase in Council Tax is never welcome. However, this decision follows detailed discussions, consultations, and a commitment to maintaining the high standards of service and facilities that Shaftesbury deserves. This adjustment ensures we can continue to meet the needs of our growing and vibrant community.”
The additional funding will be allocated to a range of essential priorities, including the ongoing maintenance of cherished facilities such as the Lido and the development of the Mampitts Hub throughout 2025/2026. The council will also invest in parks and open spaces, enhance play areas, support biodiversity projects, and improve public amenities. Health and wellbeing initiatives like Shaftesbury Wellness will be sustained, and new projects, such as the VE Day 80 commemoration event in May 2025, will be enabled.
The Town Council has taken a strategic approach in formulating the 2025/26 budget, drawing on feedback from the December 2024 Public Budget Meeting, insights from budget workshops, and the long-term Strategic Plan. The financial outlook for 2025–2029 has been reviewed to ensure the Council can sustain essential services, implement necessary improvements, and manage its valuable community assets.
