Shaftesbury Lido calls out for votes to get a share of Tesco’s Stronger Starts Fund

Shaftesbury Town Council is bidding for a cash boost from the Tesco Stronger Starts initiative.

Three groups in every community have been shortlisted to receive the cash award with Shaftesbury Lido being one of them. Working in partnership with the Friends of Shaftesbury Swimming, the Town Council is hoping to win the grant to fund the purchase of a defibrillator for the pool. This vital piece of equipment will help to enhance the safety for swimmers of all ages.

Town Clerk, Brie Logan commented: “We are delighted to be part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts initiative. Our Lido is a highly valued community asset, accessed by all ages and we need to ensure that we continue to provide a safe environment for our swimmers. The purchase of a defibrillator is an important step towards achieving this.

“We have a very passionate and supportive community, so hope that as many residents as possible vote for us!”

Tesco works with community charity, Groundwork, to run its community-funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £1,500, £1,000 and £500 awarded to local community projects, with a particular focus on children and young people.

Shoppers are being invited to head along to the Shaftesbury Tesco store to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Voting will open during the first week of October and run until mid-January. Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the checkout each time they shop.

Lead councillor, Cllr Lorah Wild said: “Getting a defib at the Lido would be amazing! Defibs are a great asset in a medical emergency as they help guide the first aider until the ambulance arrives.”

Tesco’s Stronger Starts (previously Tesco Bags of Help and Tesco Community Grants) has already provided over £100 million to more than 50,000 projects across Britain.

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities, particularly those helping to provide food and giving children the support they need for a good start in life. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more, visit: tescoplc.com/strongerstarts
