Shaftesbury Orchard Town News Oct 2026

Squeeze of the day

‘Apple Juicing Day’ at Lindlar Hall in Shaftesbury on Sunday 4th October was declared a resounding success by around fifty people who joined a ‘core team’ of volunteers to convert raw apples into delicious juice which was bottled and distributed for free.

The bulk of the apples were scrumped from gardens and orchards in Shaftesbury. Special thanks must go to the Quakers who donated almost their entire crop. Thanks also go to Jon Pinder of Springhead in Fontmell Magna, who supplied a goodly stock.

Some folk arrived empty handed but keen to help with the washing, rinsing, chopping, mashing and pressing. Others brought great baskets of apples to add to the mix. So much juice was made and taken away that it was impossible to keep track!

Event organiser Joe Hashman said, “It was inspiring to see people from across the generations happily working together for a common cause, sharing the load and then the spoils. This was community cohesion at its best.”

Apple Juicing Day was the the latest push by Shaftesbury Orchard Town to promote cultivation of edible trees in gardens, green spaces, parks and streets all over the green rock hill.
