Shaftesbury Town Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Phil Elsworth as Shaftesbury’s new Town Crier, following an open recruitment process in July. The appointment marks the continuation of a proud tradition in Shaftesbury, one that blends history with modern community life and brings colour and ceremony to civic occasions.
A historic role with modern purpose
Town Criers have played an important role in British life for centuries. Before the widespread circulation of newspapers, they were often the only means of delivering official proclamations to the public. Standing in town squares and on high streets, they would ring their bell, call “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!” and share the latest royal decrees, local by‑laws, or news of importance. Though the need for criers to spread information has long since passed, the role has endured as a valued ceremonial position, bringing a sense of heritage, occasion, and continuity to towns across the country.
In Shaftesbury, the Town Crier is now a familiar figure, lending voice and presence to community events. The role involves announcing at civic ceremonies, supporting local initiatives, and welcoming visitors with the distinctive call. Dressed in traditional livery and carrying the signature bell and scroll, the Town Crier embodies both spectacle and symbolism, reminding residents and visitors alike of the town’s rich history and strong community spirit.
Standing out from the crowd
Mr Elsworth was chosen for the honorary position after impressing the interview panel with his clarity, energy, and appreciation for the traditions of the role. His audition was particularly memorable, delivering a rhymed cry with great zeal and flourish. It could be heard as far as both Shaftesbury Abbey and Gold Hill Museum. The panel also praised his ability to think quickly in public and respond with confidence to different situations, an important quality for someone whose role involves engaging directly with residents and visitors. Adding a personal touch to his application, Mr Elsworth created his own costume for the audition. The outfit, adorned with Dorset buttons in Shaftesbury’s colours, reflected both creativity and a sense of civic pride. It also demonstrated the respect and commitment he brings to representing the town.
The Mayor of Shaftesbury, Cllr Virginia Edwyn-Jones, spoke warmly about the appointment, saying:
“We felt very confident that Phil would be able to think on his feet in public and react appropriately in all situations. Added to which his excellent audition ‘cry’, which could be heard in both the Abbey and Gold Hill Museum, all delivered in rhyme with great zeal and flourish convinced us that he was the best person for the role. I should also mention that Phil had made his fantastic costume, which was adorned with Dorset buttons in Shaftesbury colours – an impressive additional touch!”
What the Town Crier will do
As Shaftesbury’s Town Crier, Mr Elsworth will become a regular presence at key moments in the civic calendar, from parades to ceremonial gatherings. The Crier also plays a role in promoting local events and initiatives, helping to share messages with the community and ensuring that Shaftesbury’s traditions are kept alive for future generations.
This is an honorary position, supported by a modest honorarium and membership to the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, which links criers across the country. While the role is steeped in tradition, it remains very much part of community life today, offering a unique way to connect residents and visitors with the town’s heritage and spirit.
Looking to the future
Shaftesbury Town Council now looks forward to hearing Mr Elsworth’s first official cry, which will mark the beginning of his service as Shaftesbury’s voice at public occasions. His appointment ensures that the town’s historic traditions continue to flourish, while also giving new energy to a role that remains as engaging and relevant as ever.
Look out for our new Town Crier at forthcoming events where his ringing bell and distinctive call will once again bring ceremony and celebration to the heart of the town.
